Spotlight On: Chai Balcombe
Chai ended 2016 with a Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design at Melbourne Polytechnic after previously completing a Bachelor of Fine Art, following a Diploma of Visual Art at RMIT University, this has allowed Chai to conceptually explore bees through many mediums.
"The bee’s pollination of our food supply is a crucial point in human dependence on them, for our survival. Spending time observing, collecting and rescuing bees, I consider their behaviours to be altruistic. I feel a private connection with these creatures and a moral obligation to care for them.
The nature of my work intends to create an intimate connection between humans and bees via the wearable/handheld objects I make as a reminder of the smallness of bees and the grandness of their importance, which is often forgotten in our fast-paced societies."
Chai's practise intends to generate consciousness of bees within people and an awareness of their current world-wide demise.
You can explore their work at St Margaret’s Church of Art, St Benedicts St, Norwich
